Day 1 – Tuesday, August 1, 2023 - MBS, DWe will depart Grand Rapids this morning and enjoy breakfast snacks and coffee as we head out on our tour. Along the way, we will stop at The Sherman House and Georgian Museums. Dinner this evening will be a buffet at our hotel in Charleston, West Virginia.
Day 2 – Wednesday, August 2, 2023 - CB, DAfter breakfast at the hotel we will head to Appomattox Court House to see where Lee surrendered to Grant to end the Civil War. We will also visit the Civil War Museum at Appomattox. After this, we will head to Petersburg, where we will see the location of Grant’s Headquarters during the siege of Petersburg. Dinner will be at Joe’s Steak and Seafood.
Day 3 – Thursday, August 3, 2023 - CB, DToday we will see The Crater and Fort Fisher, both at Petersburg National Battlefield. Our next stop will be Richmond, where we will tour the White House of the Confederacy and the American Civil War Mueseum at Historic Tredegar. We will drive down the 14 blocks of Monument Avenue before we go to Roma Italian Restaurant in Mechanicsville for dinner. After dinner, we will visit Cold Harbor, the site of one of the most dramatic and decisive engagements of the Civil War.
Day 4 – Friday, August 4, 2023 - CB, DTo start our day, we will tour Hollywood Cemetery, where many noteable people from the Civil War are buried, including Jefferson Davis, the only President of the Conferate States of America. We will also visit Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park and take in some of the battlefields that are a part of the National Park. This evening after dinner, we will head to our hotel in Manassas.
Day 5 - Saturday, August 5, 2023 - CB, LThis morning we will see Manassas National Battlefield Park. After we explore the park, we will head into Washington DC for lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe, then a tour of Ford’s Theater, where President Abraham Lincoln was fatally shot. Next we will tour Arlington National Cemetery in a private tram, stopping at Arlington House, once the home of Robert E Lee, The Kennedy Family Gravesites, and see the changing of the guard at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Afterward, we will go to Pentagon City Mall. There are many restaurants to choose from for dinner. This evening, we will have some time to visit the Lincoln Memorial and others nearby before we return to our hotel in Manassas for the night.
Day 6 – Sunday, August 6, 2023 - CB, DToday we will visit both Harper’s Ferry and Antietam before heading to Gettysburg. Once we arrive in Gettysburg, we will go to the Visitor Center to see the Museum, the movie A New Birth of Freedom, and the Cyclorama (You have to see this to believe it). Dinner will be at Dobbin House Tavern, which is housed in a building that was a part of the Underground Railroad. After dinner, there will be some shopping time before we go to the hotel.
Day 7 – Monday, August 7, 2023 - CB, LWe will spend the day at Gettysburg National Military Park, first touring the battlefields of Gettysburg. We will have a boxed lunch at the cafe at the Visitors Center before we head out to see the Cemetery, including the spot where Lincoln gave the Gettysburg Address. We will stop back at the Visitors Center for some shopping time before leave Gettysburg for Somerset, Pennsylvania. Dinner will be on your own at your choice of either Pine Grill Restaurant or Rey Azteca in Somerset. After dinner, we will check into our hotel for the night.
Day 8 – Tuesday, August 8, 2023 - CB
We will stop at the Flight 93 Memorial before we begin our journey home. We will stop for lunch along the way. Our approximate return to Grand Rapids will be at 7:00 pm (no dinner stop)
